EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.

Other Developments in the News

In related judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked efforts to reduce security grants to states that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official ruled the case was “a further instance” of linking federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans prior to the new year, coinciding with an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to take in a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, after signing a formal agreement with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit seeking the removal of a political figure’s name from a prominent performing arts center in Washington DC.

Experts point out that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international actions.
