Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Confirmed

The Philippines was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the massive storm triggered widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, mudslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of 1.4 million people across the country.

Extensive Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams documented floodwaters climbing to the tops of houses and homes being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people stranded on the roof engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official explained. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was about to be ripped off by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

By Monday, authorities announced two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and a second individual killed when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The intense storm was downgraded to a typhoon early Monday as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts peaked at over 170 mph.

The storm system is projected to lose strength while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons had to be suspended on Sunday due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making tropical storms stronger and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines this year.

Researchers report that the frequency of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has risen by more than 100% over the last two decades.

International estimates suggest that intense storms result in an average of US$3.5 million in damage for the Philippines annually.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency last week due to the extensive devastation caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
