Federal authorities have officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to halt the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, submitted to a US district court, challenges the redistricting plan supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and undermines the democratic process," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will survive court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," stated a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Latino communities in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major response by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that began in Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to gain just a handful of Republican-held House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
